Last night my Mom handed me a letter from the School about a drill they are having on Wednesday.
It's not a fire drill.
It's a massacre drill. A massacre drill in light of all the school shootings in the last few years.
The children are locked in there classrooms with their teachers, pushed into the corners, into closets, under desks, and taught how not to react and to keep completely quiet. Police officers walk up and down the halls banging on doors, screaming things like "Come out" and "I'll find you"
How fucking HORRIFIC is THAT!?!?
Not just that the school is subjecting the kids to this but that it's NECESSARY to subject the kids to this. We're talking children as young as 5 years old needing learn how not to die at school.
The biggest pisser about the whole thing is that we have to terrorize our children because as parents and teachers we have never properly addressed the issue of bullying or the general mental health of our children. Parents aren't taking the time to really talk to their kids, teach them the skills they need and address the problems they have and the schools are not addressing the devastation that bullying can cause.
It's not a perfect world and it doesn't have to be, but we at least need to give our kids the tools to solve conflicts without violence. We need to teach our kids tolerance.
Something more needs to be done. It's just that simple.
